Blackjack Glossary
Short, plain-English definitions for every Blackjack term you will actually run into at the table or in the trainer.
- Hit
- Ask the dealer for another card.
- Stand
- Take no more cards.
- Double (Double Down)
- Double the bet, take exactly one card, then stand.
- Split
- Separate a pair into two hands, each with its own bet.
- Surrender
- Forfeit half the bet to end the hand on the worst situations.
- Hard hand
- A hand with no Ace, or an Ace that must count as 1.
- Soft hand
- A hand containing an Ace counted as 11.
- Bust
- A hand whose total exceeds 21.
- Blackjack
- An Ace plus a ten-value card on the initial deal. Pays 3:2.
- Shoe
- The 6–8 deck dealing device used in most Blackjack games.
- Soft 17 (S17 / H17)
- House rule for whether the dealer stands or hits on A,6.
- DAS
- Double-after-split allowed.
- House edge
- The casino's mathematical advantage, ~0.5% with perfect play.
- Basic strategy
- The mathematically optimal play for every hand vs every dealer up card.
- Card counting
- Tracking the high/low card ratio left in the shoe.
- Running count
- Hi-Lo: +1 for 2–6, 0 for 7–9, −1 for 10–A.
- True count
- Running count divided by decks remaining; drives bet sizing.
- Insurance
- Side bet vs dealer Ace; basic strategy says decline.
- Push
- A tie. Bet is returned.
